martin lewis, the insane house kid from berlin is breaking bad with his new and massive “rewind ep” on freebase records. with his first strike “believer” he delivers a flat footed house banger with a grumpy bassline, flavoured with an hypnotizing vocal sample. the second track “ breaking bad”, a genuine groove tool, is also influenced by martins garage credo. sublime melody riffs are competing with a wiggling bassline. tuff city kids, aka gerd janson and phillip lauer come up with two mind- boggling remixes of “believer”. at the “acid remix” they take out their breaky 90s acid drumset. this one is dry, jacking and sophisticatedly tribal. the “tuff city kids remix” starts with desert- dry acid elements which grow up to an uplifting acid soundwall. a true “jack in the box”.

doc scott was on the decks. it was at tribal gathering (i think), 1996, standing in front of a wall of speakers to one side of the stage, enjoying myself, like you do, when this sound started growing inside my brain. my head was then ripped clean off my shoulders! words are still hard to find! it was the first time i ever heard shadow boxing and its the only thing i still remember from that night. om units 2014 remix is paired with the 1996 original.

when the aquaplano records were first released in 2008 and 2009, emerging out of hardwax with little fanfare, they were distinctly out of step with the way techno appeared to be heading. the minimal detour was reaching its logical endpoint, and producers were returning to the 1990s for inspiration, with berghain and sandwell district at the vanguard of a new techno movement. what the aquaplano sessions shared in common were slower bpms and finding inspiration in the 1990s, but there they parted ways. the influences these italians were drawing on were rather different, returning to tribal rhythms and ambient textures to sketch out a much more heady, psychedelic form of techno.

review: japans 9dw release their first track for is it balearic..? right on is a super chilled loopy slo mo disco gem. touches of soft acid and boogie bassline make this a certain for the more discerning dancefloor. the mushrooms project remix creates an ever growing tribal dubby trip with what sounds like a jews harp thrown in for good measure. mesmerising. the b side features a track that has been an iib favourite for a couple of years since it was heard live in loop tokyo. this slowave almost out of sync techy chugger is not like anything else. evolving with analogue synths and stabs to become a heads downs stomper. international man of mystery man power adds man power to the track and creates a slightly darker journey into synth land

the remix package kicks off with a reworking from alexi delano who has recorded for poker flat, harthouse. items and things, plus 8 amongst others who takes the title track secret moon in a deep and spacious house direction with their superb mix that works from the off. l.a. artist david alvarado steps up next on kazantrip and drops a driving slice of brooding techno that is perfect warehouse material. last, and no means least, is the rather legendary d. digglers live dub interpretation. the urgent low end tribal nature provides a solid backdrop for the fluid elements of the original to drift over. this wax edition release is a rich & complex package of mixes with real depth and is another stellar single from the ever­impressive klartraum and certainly worth to be pressed on lucid vinyl.

norwegian dj/producer cave returns to shadowfax with more mind blowing sub-science. known from his tribal driven techno creations including the huge ingoma 008 and pumping work on his own spilo, cave now shows a very different side of his interests...

a four-track ep, bemired and evil-eyed, but with room for arnaldo to breathe out and flex a little after his spooked, sparked contribution to blank slate 001. the opener is a dubwise bubbler, with spaced-out keys, free woodblocks, shuffling hi-hats and elastic 303 bass. atmosphere breached is more jazzy and messed-up, running funky organ through sizzling fx, syncopated handclaps and filtered groans. the flip is dancefloor-trained. our pick of the bunch, verano is in a dark, hissing, aqueous world of its own, chugging and stomping, with relentless tambourines, crunchy filtered tribal drums and detuned horns. heads down to close: lost voices and a 909 kick, chattering hi- hats and rattling percussion administer the licks.

this ep on memento records sees alfonso leon take his production skills to the next level. vinyl compresors soulful melodies and tribal percussions are matched by a deliciously funky and luscious bass line, until acid synth stabs open the way to a low-pitched, creepy, almost manic dark vocal that crawls along the groove.
fabrizio maurizis unique taste resonates hugely in his remix: a computerised, robotic low frequency bounce underpins a loopy rework of the dreary vocal, bringing its more rhythmical and human elements to the fore, marrying them to the relentless beat. outstanding works, both tracks.

irish producer myler presents the fatland ep, a collection of two originals and two remixes that marks the fourth release for burgeoning brooklyn imprint fifth wall. the original *blue madams* is a percussive slab of techno that drills away with tribal crunch, while *glad bags* sounds like a wonky take on a 70s horror soundtrack. on the remix front, berlin-based vault series affiliate moerbeck provides a lascivious techno/house hybrid in his take on *blue madams*, while londons metrist seems to channel an eccentric warehouse-dwelling baboon in his remix of the same.

africa friends is a tribal-inspired tech-house track with a lot of driving elements. the remix of yapacc however is rather a remixer typical interpretation somewhere between funky minimal and melodic techno. another centerpiece of this ep is the remix of quenum, who founded the imprint cadenza along with luciano a few years ago. as a small gimmick nicolas duvoisin serves an additional groovy track called people dance.
